The Champions League is the most important club competition in Europe and one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world of football. It encompasses the best teams from the old continent based on their results in the national leagues. The places available to distribute by each federation depend on the UEFA coefficient. The champion gets automatically for the next edition, in addition to being guaranteed to play the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

The tournament started in 1955 as the European Cup and was played in direct elimination only between the champions of the leagues. The competition acquired the name of the Champions League in 1992, adding a group stage to the format that allowed the number of places available to be expanded and to host a greater number of teams.

Currently, the competition has the presence of 32 teams that are divided into eight groups of four. The top two of each advance to the round of 16. The third, goes on to compete in the Europa League. The top 16 play round-robin ties to reach the grand final, which is played as a one-game match in a neutral stadium designated by UEFA.

Televisions are a fundamental part of the success of the Champions League. The broadcasting rights are sold alongside those of the European Super Cup over a period of three seasons. To give the networks a greater offer, UEFA brought forward two matches each day of the group stage at 18:55 CET. In this way, they can broadcast two matches during each day of the first phase. The final is one of the sporting events that paralyzes the planet every year and is followed by more than 100 million spectators.

Real Madrid has made history in this tournament on several occasions. The whites conquered the first five editions in a row and were the first club to reach the dozen twisted ones. Under the current format, they were the first team capable of defending the crown. In a glorious stage with Zidane on the bench and Cristiano Ronaldo as the great star, they chained the titles of 2016, 2017 and 2018.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced to modify the structure of the Champions League during the 2019-20 season. All quarter-final, semi-final and final matches were played in a single match in Lisbon, a neutral venue. Bayern were proclaimed champions after defeating PSG in the title match 0-1 thanks to a goal from Coman.
