The German Cup is a direct elimination tournament, organized each year by the Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB) , which faces the best teams from Germany. The champion gets a place in the Europa League and faces the winner of the Bundesliga in the German Super Cup .

The competition was founded in 1935 under the name Tschammerpokal . Their first champion was Nürnberg , beating Schalke 04 2-0. Starting in 1943, the German Cup was interrupted for almost ten years by the Second World War. In 1952, the DFB reintroduced the tournament under the current nomenclature of DFB-Pokal .

It has 64 participants. The 36 of the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga , along with the top four of the 3. Liga , their presence is guaranteed. The rest of the places are distributed among the winners of the regional football cups. With the exception of the subsidiary teams, any club that is registered in any of the German soccer leagues can play it. In the event of a tie in a match after 90 minutes, extra time and penalties are used to break the equality.

At the time of the first round draw, the German Cup competitors are divided into two pots. The first is made up of the 18 in the Bundesliga and the 14 best classified in the 2. Liga. The second, for the rest of the clubs. In this way, the teams of the German first division cannot face each other, at least, until the round of 16.

The final of the German Cup has always been held at the Berlin Olympic Stadium since 1985. The Deutscher Fußball- The Bund made this decision because the country's capital was not chosen as one of the venues for the 1988 European Championship due to the political situation in the area.

One of the great attractions of this type of tournaments is the possibility of seeing the most important clubs in the country face off against the modest ones. A situation that, throughout history, has produced many surprising and unpredictable results. In 1970, Kickers Offenbach was the first to become champion playing in the 2. League. A feat that Hannover 96 also repeated years later.

The Bayern is the great dominator of the record of the German Cup . It has won more than 20 titles in the competition while no other club has won the trophy on ten or more occasions.
