The Liga 1 Peru is the highest category of football in Peru and is organized by the Peruvian Football Federation. The tournament was founded in 1912 on the occasion of the appearance of the first clubs in the country. Since its creation, it has been played every year, except for the period between 1922 and 1925, due to the fact that the participants did not reach an administrative agreement, and in 1936, due to the presence of the national team in the Olympic Games held in Berlin.

The current structure has 18 participating teams and two short tournaments called Phase 1 and Phase 2. In the first, the clubs are divided into two different groups. The first of each face in the final to determine the champion. In the other, there is a single group and everyone is pitted against everyone. The two winners and the first two of the accumulated table access the playoff in which the definitive champion is determined. If the same team occupies several places, it advances to the final.

The accumulated table of the Liga 1 Peru , which takes into account the results of both phases, is the one that determines both the access to the continental competitions and the demotion . The first four of the classification are awarded a place in the Copa Libertadores. The fifth, sixth and seventh play the next edition of the South American Cup. The sixteenth plays a tie for permanence against the second of the second category. The two with the fewest points go down directly .

Throughout history, more than 20 different teams have been crowned national champions of Peru. University, Alianza Lima and Sporting Cristal are the three most awarded. Each one has won the trophy on more than 20 occasions, while none of the other clubs in the country has more than a dozen wound up.

The Lima Cricket was the first champion of the Liga 1 Peru . The inaugural edition was attended by eight teams that faced each other in a free-for-all format. The Escuela Militar abandoned the competition during their dispute by finishing last in the classification to avoid tarnishing their prestige. The club from the capital finished tied on points with the Association F.C. and equality was broken through the results of direct duels between the two. There is no data about the exact score obtained by each one or the goals scored by each one.
