The Liga Pro Serie A is the highest division of the Ecuadorian league system and is managed by the Liga Profesional de Fútbol del Ecuador .

The competition was founded in 1957. Until 1950, all football played in the country was amateur. A situation that changed when the Guayas Football Association turned professional and organized the first tournament among its affiliated clubs in Guayaquil.
